Bipolar II treatment with Lamictal?

Question:
I recently saw a new psychiatrist that diagnosed me with Hypo manic depression or Bipolar II. He has prescribed Lamictal as treatment for me. I'm really scared about possible allergic reactions to the drug. I have read some pretty nasty stuff about possible side effects. I'm wondering if there is anyone out there who has been on this drug with some success? I need some hope that the risks out weight the reward. This doctor appears very confident that this is the drug that is going to make the difference. The problem is I've only seen the doctor once. Let me know what you think either way.

Answer:
My doc has me starting at 25mg. I have decent insurance which covers my meds. I'd say be aware of the side efx (rash, etc.), but don't let them scare you off a drug which may help you a lot. A long slow taper up may be the best way to take Lamictal, so be patient. It has been reported that Lamictal has a strong antidepressant profile, which might help quite a bit. I took it in conjunction with Parnate with poor results, so watch out if you're using it with any AD.
