Bipolar Meds?

Question:
have just been told I have bipolar and the DR, has me on neurontin 300 mg 1 qid and xanax 0.5 mg 1 qid and prozac 20mg 2 q am.what i would like to know is how long will it take to stop my mood swings? all i do is sleep and when i am a wake i am crying or very mad and want to yell at every one i see. today when i got up to walk i fell and that has happen twice now,is that normal to fell this way or should i call the dr. please help me understand these med's.

Answer:
As a fellow bipolar, expect it to take some time to get stabilized... not only for the meds to really hit, but also to find the dosages and proper meds you need. It's not easy to treat bipolar depression and very individualistic. My doc has me on a different regimen for bipolar, one that includes Depakote, Geodon and two antidepressants, plus some other stuff, and slowly things are starting to work out for me and days are looking better. Good luck to you and hang in there. I hope you are seeing a proper "pdoc"
(psychiatrist) for this and not just your family doctor. They don't have the patience nor anywhere near the expertise necessary to note and deal with the subltle changes you experience on the meds. You need someone really sympathetic and sharp who can take plenty of undistracted time during sessions to listen and help you adjust meds and try new approaches as needed. It's really an art.
