Is a nervous breakdown a sign of depression?

Question:
Can anybody tplease tell me what the signs are for a nervous breakdown, and what happens when you have/ing one.

Answer:
What makes you feel like you might be having a nervous breakdown? "Nervous breakdown" is a lay term referring to any breakdown in life functioning due to mental disorder or mood. If you feel your life is breaking down around you because of internal mental events, and if you feel you need help for that, then that is a nervous breakdown. Go to a physician and get checked out - "nervous breakdown" is not a medical term, not an accurate statement of a problem, it's merely a reflection of an effect, the breaking down of life skill. The cause could be a lot of things from mental or affective disorder to thyroid dysfunction. Get checked out. I wondered about this too - what's the difference between what's called a 'nervous breakdown' and depression? So much of what I'm feeling seems more like the former than the latter - but there are so many explanations and experiences it seems hard to unravel.
