Natural remedies for anxiety and depression -does anything work?

Question:
I've been reading about various remedies but there seems to be a lot of disagreement as to whether thy work or not. GABA? -does or does not get absorbed? St John's wort? -tried it, didn't seem to help. 5-htp?
-I'll try it again. The only thing I've ever taken that made me feel GOOD is VALIUM. But I was addicted to it a long time ago, so only use it when really stressed out, like 1x/year for a flight or whatever. I've been so bummed out lately that I don't know what to do. Can barely get myself out of the house. Tried a "counselor" a few times, but he was useless. I swear I could have been waving a pistol at my head and he wouldn't have noticed.

Answer:
Too many factors involved for a consisant dosage. I've tried GABA a few times. When it worked, I thought "damn good stuff", but most of the time it didn't. If I could figure a way to make it consistantly absorbed, I'd be taking it for anxiety. I haven't tried it recently, but last time I bought it, there was a variety of strengths out. I had some mixed results with it. The dosage that worked on my depression made my migraines go off the scale. So, if you don't have problems with migraines or highblood pressure, it might be worth trying again. I loved xanax. Now days, docs refuse to let me have any of the benzodiazopines...
(bummer) I have a very low opinion of therapists... I hear they help some people. For me, a serious waste of time. For anxiety, you might want to try kava kava? When treating depression I have found a single approach is rarely successful. A combination of natural remedies, therapy, and perhaps medication has provided the most successes in my practice. Of these, behaviour change is probably the most important element, but often the most difficult to achieve. I agree with David. Also, you sorta have to shop for a therapist that you can get along with and trust. Don't up!
